Dimensial Methods

At Composite Inspection & Consulting Non-Destructive Testing (CICNDT), we employ a range of dimensional methods suited to the unique challenges of inspecting advanced composite materials. These methods are integral to ensuring the structural integrity and performance of components used in critical applications such as aerospace, marine, and wind energy sectors. Here’s an overview of the dimensional methods we utilize and their specific applications:

Laser Scanners

Laser scanning technology offers a non-contact and highly accurate way to capture the external geometries of complex structures. At CICNDT, we use state-of-the-art laser scanners to perform detailed inspections of large composite structures like aircraft wings and wind turbine blades. This method allows us to quickly gather comprehensive surface data, which is crucial for assessing the condition of the structure and identifying any potential issues, such as deformations or damage.

Photogrammetry

Photogrammetry is another powerful tool in our arsenal, especially for large-scale applications. We can create detailed 3D models of massive structures by capturing precise measurements from photographs. This method is particularly effective for external evaluations of wind turbine blades and aircraft surfaces, providing valuable insights into their physical condition without physical contact.

Ultrasonic Thickness Measurement

We use ultrasonic thickness measurement techniques to measure the thickness of composite materials and detect internal anomalies such as delaminations or voids. This method is essential for maintaining and inspecting composite aircraft components and wind turbine blades, where internal integrity is critical for safe operation.

3D Computed Tomography (CT)

For smaller composite parts, 3D Computed Tomography (CT) offers unparalleled insights into the internal structure of materials. The aerospace and marine sectors ideally analyze small to medium-sized components using this scanning method. However, the machine capacity limits the size of the components that can undergo this method. Such a technique is well-suited for comprehensive scrutiny of the said components, providing detailed insights into their functional and structural attributes.

Why Dimensional Methods in Advanced Composites

The advanced composites used in industries like aerospace and wind energy are particularly challenging to inspect due to their complex geometries and material heterogeneity. Our selection of dimensional NDT methods allows CICNDT to provide comprehensive inspection solutions tailored to these challenges. Whether it’s through rapid surface scanning with laser scanners, large-scale shape capturing via photogrammetry, detailed internal assessment through ultrasonic methods, or intricate internal visualization with CT scans, we ensure that all composite components meet the highest standards of safety and quality.
